McAllen Tea Party Minutes – Feb. 25, 2010

President Gordon Summers called the meeting to order and asked Pastor Ron Smith to give the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Eddie Zamora.  The President then welcomed everyone and gave an overview of who McAllen Tea Party is and what we’re about.  He ended his remarks with an optimistic statement, “The truth will win.”

Sandra Casaras, temporary chairman for the Senate District 20 of the County Republican Party gave a brief explanation of the Precinct Meetings after the polls close on March 2nd and the County Convention, which will be held on March 20th at 9:00 AM at Palmview Community Center, 3401 Jordan in McAllen off of S. Ware Road and Exp. 83.  At the Precinct Meetings, there will be an election of delegates and putting forth resolutions to be voted on.  Sandra also took questions from the floor.

Part 2 of the DVD series, “American Form of Government” was seen, which explained various forms of government and shows the results of a nation sliding from a republic to a democracy.

President Summers asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the Feb. 9th meeting, which is posted on the internet.  A motion to approve the minutes was made, seconded and unanimously approved.  Treasurer Sandy Summers gave a Treasurer’s Report (attached), copies of which were handed out.

The President called for Committee Reports, as follows:

Chairman of Political Awareness, Scott Carroll, l gave a report called “Shock and Awe” (attached) in which he gave some startling facts, which should cause us to be particularly watchful of what our children are learning in our public school systems. Linda Moore, Chairman of Events and Programs reminded everyone of the Boxed Lunch this Sat, Feb.27th, at 1:30 PM.  She also touched on the April 15th event, which needs a location for us to vote on. It will be Thursday or Saturday night, which also needs a vote.  We have some speakers in mind, but, again, we have to vote on them.

Under old business, Sandy Summers reported that she still had the list of people that ordered T-shirts and their money and that T-shirts are still in the works.  After several foul-ups, we are optimistic that we will have T-shirts soon.

Under new business, President Summers told about an article that will come out Sunday in The Monitor on the MTP and said that Jared Janes from The Monitor is at our meeting tonight to take notes.  He mentioned The Owl advertisement for a candidate that has aired on TV, as well as inviting people to take the non-partisan Voters’s Guides from Free Market and Liberty Council from the back table on their way out after the meeting.

After calling for a motion to adjourn, hearing a second, and a unanimous “aye” vote, President Summers adjourned the meeting.

MTP Minutes – 2/09/2010

President Gordon Summers called the meeting to order and asked Pastor Mario Perez to give the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  President Summers gave a short explanation of who the McAllen Tea Party is for any newcomers.  The President called for a motion to accept the minutes of the Jan. 12th and 22nd minutes as posted on the website.  After the motion to accept both sets of minutes was made and seconded, the members unanimously approved them.  Wanda Carroll, in the absence of Treasurer Sandy Summers, gave a Treasurer’s Report for Jan. and Feb. 2010, giving a balance of $4,472.23 and an ending net income of $781.70.  Pastor Mario Perez invited the MTP to a WallBuilder’s event Friday, Feb. 19th, 7:00 pm at Mid Valley Assembly Church in Weslaco with special speake4r Rick Green.

Committee Chairs next gave brief reports from their committees’ work.  Linda Moore gave a report on the Candidates’ Forum held on Feb. 6th.  The Forum was a success, although it was hoped that the attendance would have been larger.  She invited everyone to a Boxed Social on Sat., Feb. 27th, at 1:30 pm at Bill Schupp Park to get to know one another better.  MTP is encouraged to bring family and friends to enjoy fun and fellowship together. Linda discussed an April 15th  Tax Day Tea Party with definite plans to be announced. She also discussed the possibility of having Sarah Palin for a July 4th Tea Party.  Scott Carroll gave a report from the Political Awareness Committee on the Texas School Board of Education about the importance of textbooks being chosen by Texas in the area of Social Studies.  We must be vigilant and not allow a rewriting of history in them.  Fund Raising Chair, Bob Allred, gave a report on finding information about buttons to sell, and Membership Chair, Wanda Carroll, reported 115 members have now signed up.  She urged everyone to join at least one committee.

Under Old Business, President Summers asked about the status of the MTP library.  Margaret Allison is the librarian. Scott Carroll asked for donations of books, tapes, and DVD’s for the library and asked for authors, such as Michelle Malkin and Glenn Beck.  The President read a thank you note from his wife, Sandy Summers, after the death of her father, as she thanked the MTP for a donation to Gideon’s in her father’s name.

New Business brought a question about the cost for bringing Sarah Palin, but Linda Moore wanted to hold off on that discussion, until more information was obtained. Someone announced an onlilne Townhall Meeting with Debra Medina that would take place on Feb. 15th.

After calling for a motion to adjourn and a second, President Summers adjourned the meeting after a unanimous vote.
